The Olevia 747i is a perfect example of how novel technologies can benefit from the lessons of the past. Company execs tapped analog-era video techs—and their focus on physical engineering rather than software—to help guide the whiz-kid engineers designing this set. Of course, the young guys got to flex as well, which is why the 747i works as a plug-and-play computer monitor.

THE PERFECT VISION

Editor's Choice Awards: The Ultimate Guide to Home-Theater Gear - Winter 2006
This flat panel from Syntax overcomes the typical LCD bug-a-boos of slow response time and poor video processing to offer a snappy, high-resolution image right up there with the best of its type. Slow response time means the lights don’t go out as quickly as they come on, and some older LCD panels were known to show psychedelic trails behind fast-moving objects on screen. (Acid flashback, anyone?) The Olevia doesn’t. With a native resolution of 1366 x 768, the Olevia boasts a lot of pixels for sure, but it also has the video-processing chops to deliver crisp, clean images from downconverted 1920 x 1080 HD. Like all the LCD flat panels we’ve seen so far, its blacks prevent it from being a dedicated theater display. Still, it makes a killer second TV, even in a brightly lit room.
